ABOUT THE DIOCESE

A Community of Faith in Action

The Diocese of Jinja is a vibrant Catholic community located in the heart of the Busoga region in Eastern Uganda. Officially established on August 5, 1966, the Diocese was created to provide pastoral care, spiritual leadership and development support to the people of Busoga.

It was carved out of the former Diocese of Kampala, with the Episcopal See transferred to Jinja town, which remains the spiritual and administrative center of the Diocese.

Guided by the Gospel, the Diocese continues to serve as a beacon of faith, hope and love, journeying with the people of Busoga towards spiritual growth and social transformation.

Serving the Entire Busoga Region

Busoga is uniquely blessed by nature and bordered by Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, River Nile and River Mpologoma, giving the region the character of an island. The Diocese serves all districts within this vibrant region.

OUR HISTORY

Rooted in Missionary Heritage

The roots of Catholicism in Busoga stretch back to the late 19th century when the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) first evangelized the area between 1889 and 1890.

From 1899 onwards, the Mill Hill Missionaries established a more permanent mission, laying a strong foundation of faith through evangelization, education, health services and community development.

Their pioneering work planted the seeds that have grown into today’s flourishing Diocese, which continues to uphold their legacy of service and transformation.
