A Witness of Faith, Courage & Truth

St. Matthias Mulumba Kalemba was a Musoga by tribe from Bunya County in Busoga. Born around 1836, he became one of the most remarkable Uganda Martyrs, remembered for his deep faith, humility and unwavering commitment to Christianity.

He was baptized on 28 May 1882 by Pere Girault and later embraced a life of holiness, separating from practices that conflicted with Christian teachings and dedicating himself fully to the Catholic faith.

His heroic witness and brutal martyrdom continue to inspire Christians throughout Uganda and beyond, making him the fitting Patron Saint of the Diocese of Jinja.

1836

Birth in Busoga

Born in Bunya County in Busoga, Matthias Mulumba, originally known as Wante, was captured at a young age and taken to Buganda where he later grew up under the care of Magatto.

1880

Conversion to Christianity

After searching for truth through different religions, Mulumba encountered Catholic missionaries and embraced the Catholic faith wholeheartedly.

1882

Baptism

He was baptized on Pentecost Sunday, 28 May 1882, receiving the Christian name Matthias and dedicating his life completely to Christ.

1882 - 1885

Evangelization Mission

Matthias tirelessly evangelized throughout Buganda, travelling long distances on foot to spread the Gospel and strengthen Christian communities.

1886

Martyrdom

During the persecution of Christians, Matthias Mulumba was arrested, tortured and brutally killed for refusing to abandon his Christian faith.

HIS STORY

His Search for Truth

Matthias Mulumba’s life was shaped by a deep desire to discover the true faith. Before becoming a Christian, he explored Islam and Protestant teachings while seeking spiritual truth and meaning.

His encounter with the Catholic missionaries transformed his life. Inspired by their goodness, humility and teachings, he recognized in them the truth his adopted father had spoken about years before.

He eventually committed himself fully to Catholicism, embracing Christian teachings with courage and conviction, even when it demanded sacrifice and separation from his former way of life.

His dedication to prayer, fasting and evangelization made him one of the strongest witnesses of faith among the Uganda Martyrs.

“I am a Catholic and I shall die a Catholic.”

These words spoken by St. Matthias Mulumba before his martyrdom remain a lasting testimony of his unwavering faith and courage. Despite persecution, suffering and death, he remained faithful to Christ until the very end.

Witness Through Suffering

St. Matthias Mulumba endured one of the most brutal deaths among the Uganda Martyrs, remaining faithful and prayerful throughout his suffering.
