The Diocese of Jinja, located in Eastern Uganda, is a Catholic jurisdiction rich in history, faith and service. Officially established on August 5, 1966, the Diocese was created to serve the people of Busoga, a culturally distinct region bordered by Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, River Nile and River Mpologoma.
These natural boundaries make Busoga almost an island, giving the region its unique geographical identity and strengthening its historical and cultural significance.

The region of Busoga was first evangelized by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), laying the foundation of Catholicism in the area.
The Mill Hill Missionaries expanded evangelization efforts, establishing churches, schools and health institutions throughout Busoga.
The Diocese of Jinja was officially established to provide localized pastoral care for the people of Busoga.
Msgr. Joseph Bernard Louis Willigers became the first Bishop of the Diocese of Jinja.
According to Tourigny Yve, the Mill Hill missionaries arrived in Busoga in 1897 during the Sudanese mutiny. Bishop Hanlon later sent Fathers Mathews and Kerstens to minister to Catholics in Bukaleba where a temporary church and missionary station were established.
Over time, the Vicariate of the Upper Nile evolved, eventually giving rise to Kampala Diocese and later the Diocese of Jinja. These developments strengthened the Catholic presence throughout Eastern Uganda.
The Diocese remained under Apostolic Administration until Rome appointed Msgr. Joseph Bernard Louis Willigers as the first Bishop of Jinja Diocese on 13 July 1967.

Over the years, the Diocese has grown into a vibrant and active faith community operating numerous parishes, schools, health centers and pastoral programs addressing the spiritual and physical needs of the people.
